I use a Gibson L5 and a Gibson ES175 through high end jazz amps such as a Henricksen, Polytone and an 80's Roland JC55 and perfectly happy with the great jazz tone I get fron them all. Got it home and only then after buying it & by chance I discovered huge raves on the 15r & milions of mods available. I knew nothing about these amps and wasn't really looking for another amp, but had an idea to try it out only for jazz recording, and with trem & reverb thought it may work well. Picked up a mint 15r I stumbled on for a rediculous $55 and came even came with vox f/switch for trem & boost! So it was almost given to me. I don't hear any 'improvement' when I run them into the 1 X 10, or the 1 X 15 that I also built. (when at home)įWIW, I think the magic is in the speaker and cab. I never use the reverb or trem, and rarely any pedals. (and can get surprisingly loud!)įor at home practice/recording/jamming the Pathfinder 15R is the one I reach for, every time. It just sounds great all the way 'up the dial', clean or dirty. (into a home-made 1 X 10 birch plywood cab with a Ragin Cagun) When I need to be louder and don't have the PA reinforcement, I use the TA-15. I find the Pathfinders are fantastic at low volume, and become progressively crappier as the volume and gain go up. (on both my Pathfinders I have removed the clipping diodes and replaced the P/S electrolytics) When I attend our weekly jam-session, I just use the PF-15 and a small, (4) pedal-board. Like most of you, I sought out the Pathfinders after reading about them here, for years.Īll I own now are a PF-15, a PF-15R, and a Mesa Transatlantic 15. I haven't had a Marshall, (yet), but lots of Fenders, Traynors, Mesas, Peaveys, etc, Yes, a very versatile small inexpensive "value-for-money" amplifier, indeed!įantastic amps! I've owned just about everything over the years. So if the OP wants to add a 1X12 8-ohm cab to get a little more guts out of the amp, he can. I looked up the technical "white paper" on the output transistor, and it actually is more efficient, about 17 watts before clipping, at a 4-ohm load. So to accentuate the jangle when I want it, I have a Jensen "Vibranto" 12-inch 8-ohm in a 1X12 open cab to go with the 8-inch 8-ohm internal Bulldog. One more mod a player can do is bridge the traces on circuit board that the external speaker jack and internal speaker jack are soldered to, because the external speaker is wired to a finger jack as an "either/or," not "in addition to" as we are used to with traditional Fender amps. I also clipped the LEDs, but I left my treble capacitor as is, and have not done the rest of the mods the OP has, since among my guitars I have a Rick 12, to keep the jangle. I also really enjoy my Vox Pathfinder 15R for home practice, small rehearsal, and small gigs.
